For the installation will I need any special tools or equipment?
The only install tools you'll need is an allen wrench and a torque wrench. (typically installation goes faster if you use a socket or drill) to tighten down the set screws. Installation instructions are available below.
Can I carry the parts to the roof or will I need a piece of machinery to set the pieces on the roof?
Most the components come palletized except for the 21' lengths of pipe. Usually our customers have them hoisted onto the roof with a crane.
For liability reasons, do I need to be a certified installer or do I need any special training to perform the installation?
Anyone can install the railing. No training or certifications needed. This is part of the cost savings of the system. Basically follow the installation instructions and you're all set.

KeeGuard® Installation Instructions

The modular components of the KeeGuard Fall Protection Railing System typically allow two installers to install a 600 foot run in 8 hours once all the materials are on the roof.

  1. Be sure the locations of all the main uprights are free from stones and other loose debris.
  2. Position a KGU. Connect the counterbalance assembly, CB5 to the KGU upright with the 44' long 1-1/4' pipe and tighten the set screws to 29 ft/lbs (39 Nm).
  3. Position a KGU at 3' 3' from the first upright and connect a CB3 assembly with the 29' long 1-1/4' pipe and tighten the set screws to 29 ft/lbs (39 Nm).
  4. Position a KGU at 6' 6' from the previous upright and connect a CB1 assembly with the 29' long 1-1/4' pipe and tighten the set screws to 29 ft/lbs (39 Nm).
  5. Slide the Schedule 40 1-1/2' galvanized pipe through the fittings at the top and at the mid section of the uprights to form the rails and tighten the set screws. Connect the lengths of handrail together using Kee Klamp fitting Type 14-8 (Straight Coupling) and tighten the set screws to 29 ft/lbs (39 Nm). Be sure to always stagger the joints of the handrail between bays.
  6. Continue along the roof edge repeating steps 4 & 5.
  7. Ideally the 14-8 (Straight Coupling) connections on the mid rail and top rail should be offset by 6' 6'.
  8. At 90 corners, use Kee Klamp 15-8 (90 Elbow). Ensure that an upright is no further than 20' from the corner, and that the total length between uprights around the corner is no greater than 6' 6'.

1.1 Summary

1.3 Submittals:

  1. Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:
    1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
    2. Shop Drawings: Indicate profiles, sizes, connections, size and type of fasteners and accessories.
    3. Field Measurements: Verify field measurements prior to assembly and/or ordering.
      Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
    4. Installation Instruction.
  2. Shop Drawings: Drawings showing fabrication and installation of handrails and guardrails including plans, elevations, sections, details of components, anchor details, and attachment to adjoining units of work
  3. Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two complete sets of color chips representing manufacturer's full range of available colors and patterns

1.4 Quality Assurance

  1. Railings Structural Requirements:
    1. Handrail, wall rail and guardrail assemblies and attachments shall withstand a minimum concentrated load of 200 pounds (90719 g) applied in any direction on the top rail.
    2. Infill area of guardrail system capable of withstanding a horizontal concentrated load of 200 pounds (90719 g) applied to one square foot (8165 g/sm) at any point in the system. Load not to act concurrently with loads on top rail of system in determining stress on guardrail.

1.5 Delivery, Storage, and Handling

  1. Materials to be delivered to the job site in good condition and adequately protected against damage as handrails are a finished product.
  2. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.

1.6 Project Conditions

  1. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.
  2. Field Measurements: Where handrails and railings are indicated to fit to other construction, check actual dimensions of other construction by accurate field measurements before fabrication; show recorded measurements on final shop drawings.
    1. Where field measurements cannot be made without delaying the railing fabrication and delivery, obtain guaranteed dimensions in writing by the Contractor and proceed with fabrication of products to not delay fabrication, delivery and installation.
  3. Coordinate fabrication and delivery schedule of handrails with construction progress and sequence to avoid delay of railing installation.

  2. Roof Edge Protection: Provide freestanding KeeGuard Roof Edge Protection System, including pipe railings, uprights, bases, counterweights and fittings.
    1. Freestanding counterweighted guardrail system with 42 inch (1067 mm) minimum height to provide a pedestrian egress barrier on the roof to withstand a minimum load of 200 lb (90719 g) in any direction to the top rail per OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.23.

2.3 Materials

  1. Pipe:
    1. Steel Pipe: Steel, 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) schedule 40, galvanized.
    2. Tube: Galvanized tube, 12 gauge, 1-1/2 inches, 1.90 inches (48 mm) OD.
  2. Fittings, Including Elbows, Crossovers, Wall flanges, Tees, Couplings:
    1. Galvanized Malleable Cast Iron: Kee Klamp structural pipe fittings, ASTM A447 with ASTM A153 galvanizing.
  3. Finish: Polyester factory applied spray coating.
  4. Fasteners: Type 304 or 305 stainless steel or galvanized.

2.4 Fabrication

  1. Fit and shop assemble components in largest practical sizes for delivery to site.
  2. Upright tops shall be plugged with weather and light resistant material.
  3. Assemble components with joints tightly fitted and secured. Accurately form components to suit installation.

PART III - EXECUTION

3.1 Prepartaion

  1. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result.

3.2 Installation

  1. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Fit exposed connections accurately together to form tight joints. For all connections with Kee Klamp fittings, each set screw is to be tightened to 29 foot pounds (39 N-m) of torque.
  3. Perform cutting, and fitting required for installation of handrails. Set handrails and accurately in location, alignment, and elevation, measured from established lines and levels.

3.3 Protection

  1. Protect installed products until completion of project.
  2. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
