Securing Vehicle Maintenance Pits for Fire Departments

Fire engines are crucial tools in the fight against fires and during rescue operations. Due to their special equipment and size, such as heavy water tanks, extensive equipment and special requirements, they are often unsuitable for standard lifts.

Firstly, OSHA defines a vehicle maintenance pit as a “hole”, and OSHA states:

1910.28(b)(3)(i): Each employee is protected from falling through any hole that is 4 feet (1.2m) or more above a lower level by one or more of the following: Covers, guardrail, travel restraint or fall arrest systems.

Compliance with these safety measures is therefore not only essential to prevent serious accidents but is also required by law and a prerequisite for operating the pit. 

Protecting Fire Department Maintenance Pits

One widely used method is to cover the maintenance pits with wood or sheet metal that prevents people from entering the pit. In addition, barriers in the form of chains, flags, or other warning line systems are often used to control access to the pit areas.
