That being said, here’s what needs to be considered when designing a rooftop ramp.

Slope and Gradient: The slope of your ramp is critical for both safety and usability. OSHA and ADA guidelines recommend a slope ratio of 1:12 as the maximum for accessibility. For every 12 inches of horizontal travel, the ramp should rise only 1 inch. This gentle slope ensures that the ramp is safe for all users.

Width: The ramp should be wide enough to accommodate multiple users during an emergency. OSHA and ADA guidelines recommend a minimum width of 36 inches, but wider ramps may be necessary depending on the expected volume of use or building occupancy.

Surface Material: The ramp's surface should be non-slip, even in wet conditions. Consider materials like textured concrete, anti-slip coatings, or metal grating. In colder climates, it’s essential to incorporate materials that prevent ice buildup.

Handrails and Guardrails: Handrails should be provided on both sides of the ramp for additional support, especially on longer ramps. Guardrails are also essential to prevent falls from elevated areas, meeting the OSHA code of 42 inches tall (plus or minus 3 inches) or your local building code requirements if they differ.

Landings: Long ramps should include flat landings at regular intervals to provide resting points, particularly for individuals with mobility challenges. Landings should be at least as wide as the ramp and extend at least 60 inches in the direction of travel.

Drainage: Effective drainage is crucial to prevent water accumulation, which can lead to slippery surfaces. Integrating proper slope design and drainage channels ensures water does not pool on the ramp surface.

Visibility and Signage: In an emergency, clear signage and visibility are essential. The ramp should be well-marked with directional signs, exit indicators, and lighting for safe use during low-visibility conditions.
