An Industrial Work Platform for the US Military

Industrial Platform by Building

The US Military needed an industrial work platform and they needed it yesterday.

Perhaps you can relate.

The priority of a project can shift at a moment’s notice, and you need the ability to adjust to the needs of your business. That’s why our government needed to find someone who could provide the work platform that they needed and within the timeline that would work for them.

Let’s review what happened and why they chose us.

The Need for a Work Platform

When our customer connected with us, they needed a platform that they were supposed to have the previous month. They wanted someone who could design, build and install a platform as quickly as possible while meeting their requirements.

There was a bidding process to follow, which, if you’re not familiar with, can be complicated if your primary requirement is to go with the lowest bidder without a very good reason not to.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth in space, is famous for saying:

“As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind - every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.”

So, our customer needed the lowest bidder, who could complete it in time, while providing the necessary quality.

The Requirements for a Work Platform

The first concern was making sure that the platform could meet the weight requirements. They were going to have lots of equipment on the platform, like antennas and tools. Add this to multiple workers and you have a decent amount of weight to support.

Because they have frequent thunderstorms, they were concerned about lightning strikes and water pooling on the platform. The platform needed to be grounded, which an appropriate professional, like an electrician, would need to be involved. Also, the surface would need to allow water to freely flow so that no pooling could occur.

Due to the height of the platform, they would need to comply with OSHA’s work-at-height standards. This meant guardrails. Having bright yellow guardrails helps with knowing where the workspace ends just using peripheral vision. The toeboards on the guardrails will make sure that no tool or equipment would slide off the edge to injure any workers below the platform.
