OSHA Guardrail Requirements

Applicable OSHA Codes

Here is a list of the OSHA codes and requirements that are important for fall protection guardrail.

Federal OSHA General Industry
General Industry codes cover every employment location unless there exist an industry specific code, like with Construction.

  • 1910.28 - Duty to have fall protection and falling object protection.
  • 1910.29 - Fall protection systems and falling object protection - criteria and practices.

Federal OSHA Construction Code
Construction codes apply to work for construction, alteration, and/or repair, including painting and decorating.

  • 1926.500 - Scope, application, and definitions applicable to this subpart.
  • 1926.501 - Duty to have fall protection.
  • 1926.502 - Fall protection systems criteria and practices.

When installing guardrail, whether for General Industry or for Construction, there are some common standards that need to be complied with. Those standards are:

  • Every guardrail must be 42 inches in height. In General Industry, you have a +/- 3 inch allowance.
  • The top rail must withstand a force of 200 pounds.
  • You must have a midrail halfway between the top rail and the walking/working surface so that a 19 inch sphere cannot pass through the guardrail.
  • The midrail must withstand a force of 150 pounds.
  • Fall protection guardrail is needed when you can fall into dangerous equipment or the fall is equal to or greater than 4 feet in General Industry and 6 feet in Construction.
